Is HubSpot's Free CRM Enough for a Small Contracting Business?
No affiliate links on this page. Pricing and plan details change — check HubSpot's pricing page on the day you decide.
Who this is for
Owner-operators and small crews who track leads in a notebook, texts or a spreadsheet and keep losing follow-ups.
What a CRM should do for a trade business
- Keep every customer's contact info and job history in one place.
- Track each estimate from "lead" to "won/lost" so nothing slips.
- Remind you to follow up.
- Let a second person see the same info.
Where the free tier fits
HubSpot lists a free CRM tier on its pricing page. Contact records, a deal pipeline and tasks cover points 1–3 above for many small shops. Check the current free-plan limits (users, features) on that page — we won't quote numbers that change.
Where it doesn't fit
- Dispatching, route scheduling, on-site invoicing and job costing are field-service features; HubSpot is a CRM/marketing platform. Field-service tools (e.g. Jobber, Housecall Pro) are built for that.
- If you want automated multi-step email sequences, check which paid tier includes them on the pricing page.
A simple setup for a 1–5 person shop
- Create a pipeline with stages: New lead → Site visit → Estimate sent → Won / Lost.
- Import your existing customer list from a spreadsheet.
- Create a task for every estimate: follow up in 3 days.
- Review the pipeline every Monday.
